Bubble Bobble Trilogy [AmigaJay][CD32]

Congratulations to AmigaJay (from the great Alternative Covers blog) for beginning his own series of CD32 releases, starting with a compilation of Bubble Bobble and it's two Amiga based sequels.

As it happens we had our own release of this planned at some point, which Steve already made a DVD sized cover for.

Original Post

Heli Attack Triple Pack! [CD32][SX32]

It just happens we were working on three separate projects that revolved around Helicopter shoot-em-ups, so we thought, why not release them all at once!

Apocalypse

Virgin Games. Slave by Codetapper. ISO by Earok, covers by Steve and Earok

This beautifully rendered Choplifter / Fort Apocalypse clone is the only standalone release in the pack. This is one I've wanted to play on CD32 for quite some time, but it was impractical to do so without gamepad support. Thanks to the magic of JOTD's CD32Load, the game is now fully CD32 pad compliant.

Three covers are included, one by myself with the really cool Blue Thunder image by JCH. The other ones are by Steve and are much more faithful to the original box art, thanks to a collector for sending in high resolution scans.

(PS - AmigaJay, we stole your A500 Classics logo. Hope that's ok!)

Zeewolf Collection

Binary Asylum. Slaves by John Girvin. Cover by Steve. ISO Master by Earok.

A duo of fantastic Amiga-Exclusive 3D games. This one was a popular request for some time, but a release has only recently become practical thanks again to CD32Load!  We've taken full advantage of John Girvin's slaves, offering the ability to skip right to eight different missions in the first game, and all thirty two in the second. And maybe a trainer option. Shhh.

In addition to full CD32 Pad support, you can activate a Virtual Keyboard to access all other missions and cheats that are only available from the password screen (such as 'FRAMPAGE' to access the Kestrel Jet).

Strike Collection

Cover and select screen by Steve. ISO Master and CDXL conversions by Earok.

Three games from the legendary franchise, and one "Inspired by" game.
  • Desert Strike (EA): Using CD32Load and Abaddon's brand new slave, the game is fully gamepad compliant, loads without OS flashes, allows trainers and level select on startup, defaults to NTSC (for full screen and silky smooth updates) and has guns/hydras/hellfires mapped to separate buttons exactly like the Mega Drive edition (no more fumbling with the select key in the middle of a heated battle!). Huge thanks to Abaddon for putting up with my constant feature requests and implementing all of them!
  • Jungle Strike (Ocean / EA): This is the plain-old CD32 version, but with the option of two intros - the PC CDROM DOS version and alternative "comedy" intro.
  • Urban Strike Game Gear (Black Pearl / EA): Don't flip, this isn't anything amazing. It's just the emulated Game Gear version, which is too slow to be really playable on anything underneath a 68030. It's included just as a gimmick.
  • Seek and Destroy (Vision / Mindscape): A fun little top down shoot-em-up, it notably features extensive voice acting, smooth rotating graphics and a two player mode where the second player controls the Apache's weapon systems. This again is the stock CD32 game.

Special thanks to Dan Scott

Time for another re-release!

Wonderdog is a game that I didn't give a fair go during our original release. While it's certainly yet another "animal with attitude" platformer, it's surprisingly deep and playable once you really get into it. Worlds, enemies, bonuses, bosses, secret rooms and even secret levels are plentiful! The gliding mechanic and aimable weapon (the longer you hold fire, the higher it'll arch upwards) are also quite nifty. On top of everything else, the game features a password save system so an average gamer has a reasonable shot at being able to beat it.

Cobe was fortunate enough to receive the blessing of original coder Dan Scott for his efforts (whose handwriting graces the updated cover) so we've decided to dust off the release and give it a little more love.

First up - some of the levels have had their palettes altered to more closely resemble the vibrant feel of the Mega CD original. While we understand the artist may have designed the palette with Amiga monitors in mind, we feel that the more saturated palette suits the console oriented nature of our release.

(Original on the left, new on the right)

Secondly, it wouldn't be a proper CD32 platformer unless jump was on a button rather than the dpad. We've done this, just tap Blue to jump and hold Blue to glide.

Thirdly, we're now using the magic of JOTD's CD32Load. No OS flashes, pause with play, quit with forward+reverse. Toggle music/sfx from the menu with blue.

And of course all of the bonuses from the previous release are still there:
  • CDXL intro from the Mega CD version
  • Alternative HAM6 CDXL intro. Smaller screen but more colours. Hold down FORWARD+REVERSE on startup to see this.
  • All of the level passwords are on the title screen, in case you forget or get stuck!
  • Infinite lives trainer can also be activated from the title screen.
  • The original ISO is still present in the download if you prefer one button controls and the original palette.

Tanks Furry [CD32][SX32]

Project R3D (Trailer: Pixel Nation)
Cover: Steve
ISO Master + CDXL Conversion: Earok

Tanks Furry is one of the seldom few commercial games released for the classic 68k Amiga in the past few years. Shamelessly old school, the game combines the reflex oriented gameplay of any number of arcade classics with the aesthetics of Advance Wars. On top of that, two player co-operative and four player deathmatch are also supported.

Fortunately for the CD32 community, Tanks Furry has now officially been re-released as freeware by the generous developers, so we've quickly put together a release of the game alongside a CDXL version of the trailer. Another feature exclusive to our release is that pause button is mapped to "blue" on player one's pad.

Note that this is the regular edition of the game, not the exclusive IndieGO edition that was just distributed to backers of that project. And also that the physical release is also still for sale.

Trivia: The title is actually correct, the Tank Drivers in the game are Anthropomorphic animals, ie Furries.

Q: Download X no longer works
A: Mega occasionally has issues with downloads. If it doesn't work, give it a few hours and try again. If it still doesn't work, note the exact message and game and leave a comment on the post. Also - use Firefox or Chrome rather than IE or Safari.

Q: I can't burn the CUE/ISO for download X
A: "Burnaware Free" is my default, which I find extremely reliable. "ImgBurn" seems to be less reliable, but has a lot more features (eg support for burning ISOs).

Q: Game X is unplayable with the PSX Adapter
A: Some games are entirely incompatible with the adapter in CD32 mode, try playing it in the 1 or 2 button configuration.

Q: Do these work on a real CD32?
A: Yes, in every case they've been tested on a CD32, although I haven't checked each and every single game on the 160 game compilation.

Q: In some platformers, you need to press up to jump. Can you make it so that on all platformers you can press a button instead?
A: We can't, simply because adding that functionality usually requires a custom patch in the WHDLoad slave, and implementing these is beyond my current technical ability. Normally, if this ability exists in the WHDLoad slave (eg Giana Sisters), I'll enable it. The best solution is using a third party controller like the AmiPad 32 where spare buttons are mapped to up, or the PSX adapters by Paul Willingham and Kipper2K that allows you to custom map buttons to up.

Q: On some games, the screen flashes repeatedly.
A: This is an unfortunate consequence of games that were only designed to load from floppy disc being loaded through WHDLoad or JOTD startup. Since the release of JOTD's "CD32 Load", some of these games can be loaded with far shorter times.

Q: Would you consider porting game X?
A: Absolutely, just let us know what games you'd like to see and we'll consider them. A few things to keep in mind however -
  1. We absolutely will not port games that are still for sale through ACP&TCP, AmigaKit etc
  2. Certain games we can't currently do due to technical limitations on a stock CD32, eg Primal Rage, Onescappe, Doom. We may consider doing these for SX-32 owners at a later date.
  3. We usually don't do games that are unplayable without the keyboard (we'd only make an exception to this for special cases, such as SOTB2 on the larger Shadow of the Beast collection)
  4. We do prefer doing games that we can bundle bonuses into, such as a new CDXL intro or one ported from a different version of the game.

This is an WIP attempt to provide a list of all currently available free CD32 ISO downloads, either unofficial releases or official ones that aren't on emulator sites, torrent sites etc. If we're missing any, please let me know in the comments below.

DMA Design / Psygnosis
Thanks to: JOTD for CD32Load, WHDLoad by Wepl, and the slave by Codetapper
Cover: Steve
ISO Master: Earok

An Amiga exclusive classic from DMA Design - a bloody, chaotic, tough-as-nails side scrolling shooter.

I know there's going to be a few people collectively scratching their heads right now. Walker is well known as a game that requires two simultaneous input devices - either mouse/keyboard or mouse/joystick - but for the first time it's playable with the CD32 pad alone.

For the CD32 release we've managed to make the cursor controllable by the D-Pad, and the Walker itself with the BWD/FWD buttons. The cursor moves quick when you're not firing, but slows down for more precision when you are (and of course you can still lock for more precision still). Full control explanation is in the help text that shows when you put the disc in.

Of course a D-Pad is never going to match the precision or speed of a mouse, so because of that:
- The original control scheme is available if you've got the peripherals
- Skip level and invincibility trainers soften the difficulty as much as you need

Version 1.1 update

  • "Art of Breaking Heads" has been dropped from the roster due to issues getting it to load from disc. The replacement is "WWF Wrestlemania"
  • Shadow Fighter has been changed from the CD32 edition to the AGA one. While the CD32 version would not seem to load at all, the loading times are still very long. My recommendation is to burn the original CD32 edition if you really want to play it on a real console.
  • Only the Ultimate Body Blows soundtrack is included now, reducing download and burn times.
  • Reliability tweaks to Street Fighter 2 and Shaq Fu

Thanks to numerous WHDLoad slave authors whose work is featured here. I've not credited them directly on this post, but they're all credited within the compilation itself.

This is my soft-retirement post. I'm moving into the world of commercial Amiga game development as part of the PixelGlass team, so I can no longer justify the time and effort required to churn out these unofficial discs. I may be back at some stage, but certainly not this year.

So I'm going out with a bang - this is the largest themed collection this site has ever produced, 40 fighting games across numerous different styles, most of the notable fighters are there as well as some rather obscure AMOS efforts.

This is also the first time I've written a menu system entirely from scratch, as it was my intention to write bespoke menus for each new release. All forty fighters can be selected on a menu screen that resembles your typical Street Fighter 2 clone menu (you can even choose randomly - press blue to move the cursor to a different game).

The complete list:
  • Art of Breaking Heads (broken)
  • Best of the Best
  • Body Blows AGA
  • Body Blows Galactic AGA
  • Body Blows (Ultimate)
  • Brutal: Paws of Fury
  • Budokan

This one's a little bit different for a number of reasons!

Cobe has assembled a cracker compilation of 32 demoscene productions on a single disc - almost all AGA titles such as the remarkable Nexus-7 by Andromeda, but also a few classic OCS demoscene productions as well (notably, State of the Art by Spaceballs).

What's more, the disc will by default play demos in a random order, making it a perfect "virtual jukebox" for the CD32. If there's a specific demo you'd like to watch, all you need to do is (as the title suggests) hold down the "Play" button when the console is booted.

This one has been a long time coming!
                                                              • Well over 80 of Eric W Schwartz's finest works, from the late 1980s through to the early 2010s! Including many short cartoons, looping animations, tutorials and even an image browser.
                                                              • Although all animations can be watched individually, playlists of select animations are also available:
                                                                • Aerotoons

                                                                • Other notable Cartoons (Anti-Lemmings, Morphy the Magic Man etc)
                                                              • For the first time in CDXL format, the animations "Amy: A Walk in the Park", "Amiga Tribute" and "Only Amiga"
Where possible, animations are in their original "MovieSetter" format. Many have been converted to Anim5 in order to run within the CD32's tight RAM limitations. This disc would not have been possible without RandelShofer's incredibly exhaustive page on Eric Schwartz's animations, where many of the converted animations were sourced from.

                                                              A few notes:

                                                              • The animations are sometimes unapologetically un-PC. As such, they're not for everyone!
                                                              • Most animations (the CDXL ones excluded) will loop continually until you hit the "blue" button.
                                                              • The audio is glitchy on some animations, apologies, I'm unable to fix that.
                                                              • NTSC is recommended (in PAL some animations have glitches near the bottom of the screen)
                                                              • The "Girls of ES Productions" application will quit from the menu. You'll need to restart the console to get back in to it.

                                                                                0
Due to infringement claims on some CD32.co.uk releases, the blog's Mega account has been suspended, and as such every single release is offline. Such an outcome was disappointing but not particularly surprising due to the nature of projects like this.

I think it might be a good opportunity to start over with patched and enhanced re-releases, and maybe the occasional new one, possibly each Saturday. I don't intend to re-release every project (certainly not the ones that triggered takedown notices!) but the more popular and substantial ones will receive a re-release.

It's kind of sad but kind of exciting too - and I look forward to the future of the blog.

Something of a holy grail for us is the uncovered English language version of the adventure game "Inherit the Earth". This charming adventure game featuring furries anthropomorphic animals was already released for the Amiga in German but (to the best of our knowledge) the unreleased English version has never been on the Internet - until now.

This is largely the same to what appeared on an Amiga Future cover disc several years ago but with a few changes:
                                                                                • Signed with a trademark file so it will boot on a stock CD32.
                                                                                • The "Bonus" folder from the German release is included, which includes: mod files, animations, CDXL videos, AGA and ECS demo versions of the German release.
                                                                                • Manual PDF is also included in the Bonus folder (sourced from: http://adventure.klasyka.do.pl/files/inherit.pdf).
                                                                                • The startup-sequence is the same except for the addition of a doublespeed command
Given that this is an unreleased beta version, I had to give it a full playthrough with walkthrough (on a real CD32) before publishing it here. I'm happy to say that this appears to be the complete game, all of the gameplay appears to be intact and it's all in English, both text and voices from start to end.

There are some issues though - movement is often sluggish, the "use" command sometimes misfires (eg it attempts using the object on itself when you wanted to use it with something else on screen), and I had no less than two full crashes and one fatal bug (in all fairness this could just be because of misreads from my CD32 drive). Make sure you safe often!

                                                                                Some other things to note:
                                                                                • NVRAM saving is a feature, but you'll need around 83 blocks free (!) I'm afraid you might need to drop that Simon the Sorcerer save file.
                                                                                • Mouse is not required, gamepad works just fine.
                                                                                • Press Red+Blue to skip the length intro sequence (thanks to Cobe for working this out).
                                                                                • During the overworld and isometric sequences, you can just hold down RED to move, this might be a little quicker than just tapping RED repeatedly
There are also two executables on the disc for playing from an HD equipped Amiga, both an AGA and ECS version. However, given that the voices file is over 200mb you're either going to need a CD-ROM or a decent hard drive!

(Edit: I've received confirmation that this works just fine on an A1200 with a compact flash "hard drive" and a Blizzard accelerator card, as well as a 4mb ECS A600 with cd rom)

(As a side note, a modern version of the game is available from Wyrmkeep, GOG and Steam. Also the game inspired a sequel web comic that's been running for ten years!)

12th June 2017 - While Heart of the Alien for CD32 has been re-released without enhancements, there's now a WB friendly package that includes Another World/The Lost Level with WHDLoad slaves, and an HD installed Heart of the Alien - no CD music required.

                                                                                The Lost Level

Cobe has assembled a cracker compilation of 32 demoscene productions on a single disc - almost all AGA titles such as the remarkable Nexus-7 by Andromeda, but also a few classic OCS demoscene productions as well (notably, State of the Art by Spaceballs).

What's more, the disc will by default play demos in a random order, making it a perfect "virtual jukebox" for the CD32. If there's a specific demo you'd like to watch, all you need to do is (as the title suggests) hold down the "Play" button when the console is booted.

                                                                                The complete demos list:
